Unfriend

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, 2005

The ease of communication on the internet balances precariously on a fulcrum of asshattery. Case in point: Facebook. I have a bunch of old high school people who have friended me on there, and despite the fact that I don't go to reunions and some of these people I haven't seen or spoken to since June of 1980, it seems rude to ignore their friend request, or worse and ruder yet, unfriend them once they reveal themselves to be fundamentalist Christians. I really don't have any tolerance at all for religious crazies, especially when they want to see anyone who doesn't agree with them destroyed. Preferrably smited, smoted?, by God, but if man has to do the smiting in the name of God, that's fine too. It's insane, to my mind, but to their mind, it's righteous and what is expected of them. They are on the frontlines of God's Holy Army (one woman actually said this) taking back our country for the 'real' Americans.
Of course they all adore Sarah Palin, which is perfect backwards troll logic. I would expect nothing less than total devotion to Palin and her meandering rhetoric of half truths, outright lies, and made up shit.
Anyway, my solution, if I have one, is that I'm going to have to purge some people from my friend list, because there are those on facebook who are actual friends, and I like being connected with them. These other clowns...I should just mock them, but what with the menopause and all, they set me off on Angry Street instead of merely careenly wildly down Make Fun Boulevard.
The one positive thing from reconnecting with old school mates is that a couple of them have turned out to be really cool people, with interesting lives and thoughtful insights.

Barb had the same experience after her high school reunion last year. She discovered that there is a setting in facebook that lets you hide comments made by specific friends. Of course, if they post directly to your profile page, you'll see the comment, but at least the home page is cleansed. ;)

Hmmm, I should probably do that. I just can't take the craziness coming from this one set of twins, Lori and Loni, two nuts in search of a bolt. Still, I don't want to get rid of the completely. I mean, you have to know your enemies, right?

yes...exactly the same. when visiting the homepage on fb, i kept getting assaulted by "status" updates by a person from high school (we weren't even friends back then...why did she want to be friends now??) about obama's unreliable birth certificate and how he's ruining the nation with his obamacare reform. it was depressing me to no end so i hid her status updates rather than be bold and unfriend her. i have to say, every once in a while i click to her page to see what the crazy right is up to, read a little, get disgusted, and then click off quickly feeling dirty...like i just visited a porn site.

Ugh...these kind of people suck. They don't just suck at being human - they also suck hope and life and joy from everyone else around them.

Cut 'em off. Who cares if you hurt their feelings if you're never going to see them again and their ultra-religious and intolerant views keep them from ever listening to your side of things?

Total.Waste.Of.Time.

Maddie lives! That deaf little angel is my hero. Give her some lunchmeat for me :)
But yeah, I just don't feel that I can ditch these people. And, that I do need to keep an eye on them. Not a close eye, just a half eye with floaters.
Those twins though, honestly. They get each other all riled up and then it's all hell fire, damnation, and scariest of all, cackling.

PS no, you don't have to know your enemies. Let them stay up all night and worry that the "real" America might become some insane place full of equality and tolerance. You don't have to wallow in their righteous crap. :)

facebook drove me out of my fucking mind, so i deleted my account. all the irritating, senseless updates (WHO GIVES A SHIT WHAT YOU ARE DOING EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY), the religious and political rhetoric, the losers i thought i ditched long ago in high school re-surfacing to torture me, the stuff i could not post about for fear of family seeing it -- it just didn't work out for me.

Phoenix - LOL! I'm sure that they DO stay up all night worrying that tolerance and equality might reign supreme and upset their applecart of vengeful Godliness.

Droll - this is why I gave up twitter. The constant meaningless updates. I don't care about other people's bowel movements or whether they're stuck in traffic or may have overdosed on dexatrim.
That mechanism in our heads that forces us to self edit in real conversations is simply not engaged in online instant access.
I like facebook for staying in touch with people I'm friends with who don't live near me, but I think I'm going to have to purge everyone else at some point. Maybe during a hot flash while binge drinking. Groundhog Day is around the corner. I'm sure I'll be snookered then.

I only accept friend requests from people I actually remember...and liked...heh But having attended HS in a small town, there are a an unfortunate number of past friends who grew up to be bigots...ignorant though they are... But then, I don't use facebook for activism, so I mostly just have family and a few friends from HS and a couple of work related folks as "friends"... Too bad you can customize your list and actually have categories..."family members", "friends", "co-workers" and "really special friends"...heh

Oh anonymous, where have you been? I was starting to think that maybe you met with something wicked and fell off a cliff in a burning car.
