My sister had a Barbie and a a few of the big accessories that went with her, but not the Barbie Dream House, despite asking for it year after year. As an adult she, when she was buying the second dream house for her granddaughters to play with at her house when she babysat them, she asked our mother why she never got the much coveted dream house, mom said that she had enough Barbie stuff.

I wasn't interested in dolls as a child and typically dismembered them and drew on their faces with ball point pen. And the one time my sister did prevail upon me to play Barbie with her, I put Barbie in our brother's GI Joe Jeep and sent her merrily on her way down a steep hill, and straight into a tree trunk. Barbie survived, but ever after had a dented boob.

"She's ruined!" my sister wailed. Now of course, since the Barbie movie, we now know that she was just played with too hard, and because of it, is impervious to being gaslit by the patriarchy. All hail the Barbies! They shall herald the wide-eyed future, and we will be standing by.

jennifer from pittsburghhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12188641511998447474noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778735297684424379.post-92149256156290835222023-08-12T13:21:00.004-07:002023-08-12T13:21:44.609-07:00Ohio: No on Issue 1

Ohioans did vote down the GOP attempt to limit their ability to amend their state constitution, particularly in regards to women's access to proper healthcare and abortion. I didn't want them for myself, but the items were in very good condition, and if ebay has taught me anything, it's that if the price is right, you can sell anything. I set a low price for the shoes and bag combo, $9.99 + shipping, and sure enough they sold. I first stumbled across a study conducted by researchers at the Baylor University School of Medicine on the use of baby wash in neti pots to treat chronic sinus infections during the covid-19 lockdown in the spring of 2020. I adapted the Baylor neti pot concoction for use in a 1.5oz saline nasal spray bottle. I added the baking soda after discovering that it helps to break up encrusted mucus.

Things you will need:

1- 1.5oz bottle of saline nasal spray

needle nose pliers

baby wash (I prefer Aldi brand as it seems to have least fragrance in it)

baking soda

antiseptic wipes

eye dropper

small cup to hold baby wash

Remove the protective tamper-proof cellophane from the saline spray bottle. Wipe the needle nose pliers down with the disinfectant cloth, remove the cap from the saline spray bottle, and using the pliers, pull the nozzle and stem free from the body of the bottle. Set aside. Squirt some baby wash in the small cup. Fill the eye dropper with the baby wash. Dispense 6 drops into the 1.5oz saline spray bottle. Don't worry if you add a bit more that 6 drops. Then add a pinch, about an 1/8th of a teaspoon or less, of baking soda to the mixture. Replace the nozzle and cap, shake vigorously, and you are done! It lasts for two weeks or more. Spritz your nasal passages 1-2 a day, or as needed.

jennifer from pittsburghhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12188641511998447474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778735297684424379.post-40296166020562595252020-05-31T05:14:00.002-07:002020-05-31T05:14:52.051-07:00Many Returns

Scotland Out The Window, 2018

I have been gone, as surely I have been gone before, and surely gone again. We have been sheltering in place, only going to the grocery store for necessities, and even then masked and gloved with clorox wipes in a zip-loc baggie in my pocket. My mother was with us for two months. She talks incessantly when she's stressed or nervous. As soon as was allowed, I sent her home. Her county was/is very low risk for exposure to covid-19. Rural with a high rate of diabetes and other underlying issues, those people self isolated and masked up right away. But now, we are free again. Freed from quarantine, able to go to the liquor store and buy more than one bottle at a time. Interestingly, toilet paper is still being rationed, one package per customer. I don't need it. Before the pandemic hit, I was at Costco and bought enough tp to last a year. Why not? I was at Costco and that's what that place is for. Disaster prepping for the price conscious dwindling middle class.
Dollar Tree had condensed lobster bisque on their shelves. I thought I'd try it. It was not good, and is indeed lobster bisque in name only, not in any sort of reality - even a trumpian reality. I did save the can, though. It is the absolute height of plumping the depths of pop art as envisioned by Andy Warhol.jennifer from pittsburghhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12188641511998447474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778735297684424379.post-17790756979089870272020-02-06T06:04:00.003-08:002020-02-06T06:04:57.532-08:00Blizzard!

Yes, ten years ago today, a snow squall sat over western Pennsylvania, and dumped three feet (1 meter) of snow on us. Good times. In the last few years we've barely gotten any snow in this area. Now it's all rain.

Horseshoe Crab, Primehook Beach, DE 2011
I collect their discarded molts and dead remains while the tide retreats and the sun bleeds across the bay. Some mornings the beach is littered with horseshoe crabs stuck on their backs, their pointed tails trying to gain purchase in the sand so that they can right themselves, their 8 legs blindly stabbing at a distant sky. We flip them over. But others gather them up and they are drained of their copper-based, blue blood. Not drained until death, at least not intentionally, but drained to sate medical research needs. It's ghoulish and cruel, with no international standards.jennifer from pittsburghhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12188641511998447474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778735297684424379.post-22877931272941841912020-01-24T05:50:00.000-08:002020-01-24T05:50:37.261-08:00Repeating Form

Sunday Paper w/ Bird & Cicada - or - I Know Why The Caged Bird Doesn't Sing

Yesterday we got the news that the husband of an acquaintance killed himself. He was 38 years old, an Army war veteran, receiving treatment for PTSD and depression, successfully running a contracting business, seemingly happily married...and yet...
The first thing I wondered was whether or not his wife found him. The trauma of finding someone who's committed suicide never leaves you. Though I am not speaking with first hand knowledge, I well remember my father relating the story over and over how he, as a child of about 8 or 9, was sent out with his grandfather to a neighboring farm to check on someone who hadn't been seen in a day or two. They found the farmer hanging in the barn, his tongue black and protruding from his mouth, his body bloated and grotesque. Imagine if you'd loved and cared for this man and found him like this. That twisted horror your last memory of him. I wonder why planned suicides don't just go directly to the morgue and kill themselves right there, to save the people they leave behind further grief, and expense.
It's all awful, and I don't mean to be glib. The simple fact is that when you kill yourself, you condemn that person that comes upon your corpse. You leave them with something they never asked for or wanted. I wonder if that's why Virginia Woolf filled her coat pockets with so many rocks before she walked in to the river, to remain swallowed up by the cold, dark waters, to save someone the terrible burden of finding her. jennifer from pittsburghhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12188641511998447474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7778735297684424379.post-40756392837250160502020-01-01T08:04:00.002-08:002020-01-01T08:04:41.827-08:00Where The Wild Things Are: Godzilla Edition

I know what you're thinking - That one has receded into the ether again. I disappear from this blog with some regularity. I suppose the disappearing is less unexpected than the returning. We've all visited abandoned blogs with a last entry of years ago, sometimes with a last entry also being the first entry. I recall the first flush of excitement with blogging as a whole. Some bloggers becoming famous, getting book deals and television gigs. I don't think that I was ever pursuing fame because if I were, this space would've been about something. Instead it's about everything, every single thing that crosses my path and my mind. Maybe that's why I keep coming back. Something strikes me that I want to share out into the wider world, beyond my tight inner circle of friends and family. Plus I really fucking hate facebook, and there's a lot that I would never post on that hellscape of hell. So, I return to this refuge of expression + anonymity.

I have been meaning to post something here before the end of the month. It's a decent writing exercise to create a blog post. But, I got caught up in selling an old pair of chaps, seen in the pic above, as worn by someone completely unrelated to me. In 1996 my oldest brother bought some property off of our father that included an old horse barn, with the idea that the barn would be converted into a house. And it was, but part of the old barn still exists. It comes off the back of the house and links to a large garage/work space. Lots of stuff was kept in there, but now he and his wife are thinking of downsizing, moving, and there's a ton of stuff to get rid of, including old chaps. Old chaps are quite the collectible, I learned while researching them. Even moreso if you know the least little thing about them, i.e., who did they belong to, what type of chaps are they, how beat up are they? So, my brother found this old pic of someone not our father trotting around on an unfamiliar horse in the field above our great-grandparents' house, wearing the chaps. Lucky for us, our mother knew the man, but not the horse. Mom only knew which horses it wasn't. "Well, that's not Little Bo Bars, and certainly not 'Loot."
Today the chaps sold on ebay, and the buyer promptly paid. I said that I would include a pic of the chaps being worn, and all the info I had on all of the parties concerned. If anyone wants to know who the rider is, ask in the comments and I'll clue you in. He's still alive, and quite well known in what my mother always called, Horsey Circles.

The wild sunflowers are at peak, and all of their heads turn toward the morning sun. I found these on a walk in the woods. There was a break in the dense forest canopy and then a riot of undergrowth.
We've returned from our beach vacation, where I spent 2.5 days enjoying the sand and surf, and the rest of the time on the couch with a fever and infected sinuses. Fortunately my wife called our doctor back in Pittsburgh and got her to phone in a course of antibiotics at a Rite Aid pharmacy near us. Later, my wife got the same cold, but without the fever, still all of the phlegm.
Honestly, just glad it's over and we're home.
