Issues of, or With, My Womb

Reichter, MK, Cree Summer 2007

My one kid has a few jealousy issued with MK. Namely, he's jealous of the time I spend with her. We've thwarted him, successfully, to an extent, by including him on our weekends together. Thankfully he was bored because let's face it, we're middle-aged women who are either making wine, shopping for wine, or drinking wine. It's what we do. I haven't lived an interesting life since 1998. Don't ask me what made that year interesting because I sold that journal on ebay and have signed a gag order on those stories. Suffice it to say that I drooled for three months, but then my saliva glands adjusted.

Pissed Red Redux

It's that time again boys and girls! MK and I will be bottling another batch of delicious wine! After that I'm going to throw a bunch of pears in the fermenting tank and make some brandy. All should go well as long as an open flame is kept a safe distance away.
What I love most about making hooch is the unpredictability of the entire process. Explosions, fires, cloudy poison corked up in a bottle...It's a little like being a mad scientist, only without the actual science part. I mean, yeah, sure, I know the science involved in the breakdown of sugar molecules into alcohol and all that, the exciting process of conversion. But, when you're actually making wine it seems less like science and more like, Eureka! We've got rocket fuel! Let's get blasted!

Mezza Luna

Miss Kitty and I bottled our latest batch of wine today, a mezza luna red that's semi dry with hints of oak and raspberry. We tasted it and I have to say that unless this impudent bad girl mellows a bit more, we've got a kick ass red suitable to serve at pig roasts or with bear sausage.
Yes, yes, I'm aware that it will mellow over time and just need to be patient, but dang. Though I must admit, I'm pleased with the alcohol content in this batch of wine over the last batch. The last one, a barolo, was a bit on the light side, coming in at 12%, while this one is 13.5%, which in my opinion lends itself to a cleaner taste, much more refreshing on the palate, and a better accompaniment to a meal.
Salut!
