Whilst raking leaves yesterday (I love trees, but every fall...when comes the sloughing off of their leaves, a curse is ever present on my chapped lips, long tines rasping over red and gold...) I found a few blue jay feathers, and then a few more, and then finally a pile of down that could only mean one thing: A bad end. It's not uncommon to find a dead robin in the yard, or evidence of a dead robin, but a blue jay is a new discovery. Maybe he wanted to miss the upcoming polar vortex.

Beagle Poetry

This poem is from Bela's perspective. In my mind she has a thick southern Italian accent. Anyway, we were out walking Bela the other evening and just as she was getting ready to do her business a man rounded the corner walking two large dogs. Bela hates other dogs, is suspicious of them and their intentions, so of course she couldn't leave herself vulnerable by taking a dump and instead dragged us down the street post haste. The first line of the poem is just the offhand comment that I made at the time. MK noted that it sounded like the beginning of a horrible poem, so this is all her fault.
My ass is full of bitter turds
each one an homage to your face
I have feasted on the moldy cheese of your love
and now suffer for all eternity on the shores of Garbage Island

Happy Birthday!
To kick off the specialness of the day, a little poem* I wrote for her:
Slippery Slope at Slippery Rock
Standing in the sunlight streaming
wondering if I might be dreaming
fishes swam up through the channel
your shoulders draped in plaid and flannel
you are the one, I knew it then
saw it sure as a nesting wren
*Clearly I am no poet, but I never let that stop me ;) We hiked early on during our courtship at the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge. The path was narrow and we had to walk single file, and the creek was thunderous at times so we couldn't talk much. Staring at the back of her head and shoulders, left to the fertile plains of my own thinking, I began to fall in love. Best hike of my life!
Happy birthday MK! I love you like how a cat lady loves 100 cats!
